Guests Attend Doyle's Glittering Jewelry Auction Preview at Paley Center

Luxury brands alliance benefits clients when selling or liquidating assets

The Cartier, Piaget, Rolex, and Van Cleef items up for bid were dazzling. So were the guests at a Beverly Hills jewelry auction preview hosted by luxury brands Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties and Doyle auctioneers and appraisers.

The May 12 invitation-only preview at The Paley Center for Media gave clients of each firm the opportunity to examine 450 lots of exquisite jewelry ranging from the 1840s to the modern era. Many of the pieces were obtained through appraisal days Doyle conducted at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties offices since the brands debuted their luxury lifestyle alliance last October. The lots then went on public display at the Paley Center for three days leading up to the auction on May 16.

"The preview was a fun, joyous event held in a beautiful space with floor-to-ceiling windows of white light streaming in to showcase the incredible jewelry," said Emily Marchick, associate director of operations and jewelry specialist for Doyle.

"Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties and Doyle decided to celebrate the jewelry collection and expose clients to the services each brand provides. We considered it a champagne toast to learning about fine jewelry."

In addition to mingling, enjoying Wolfgang Puck hors d'oeuvres, and hosted beverages, the nearly 120 guests had the opportunity to try on stunning pieces in a "jewelry walk-around" led by Nan Summerfield, Doyle senior vice president and director of California operations, who also discussed some of the more important pieces from various eras.

Historic Beachfront Estate in Gaviota
On the Market for $50 Million

The Royal Rancho, a Gaviota oceanfront ranch with more than a quarter-mile of private beach, is on the market for $50 million after decades of ownership by two prominent families.

The 214-acre property also is historically significant as the location where Santa Barbara was first discovered. On Oct. 16, 1542, explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and his crew dropped anchor off the site and made contact with Native Americans from two villages who paddled out to greet them. The crew did not go ashore, but left the following morning after recording for posterity a name for the verdant, serene landscape: Dos Pueblos.

The Gellens' Follow in Each Other's Footsteps for Great Causes

But Gellens' dance moves haven't only impacted her. They also benefited the San Diego Family Justice Center Foundation's efforts to support victims of domestic violence, child abuse, stalking, and sexual assault; and to increase awareness of the San Diego Police Historical Association's museum on College Avenue.

Along with her daughter and business partner, Marti Gellens, Maxine helped organize this year's event, and took to the dance floor at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines on Dec. 5 to raise funds on behalf of the two beneficiaries.

The pair even inspired Mary Lee Blaylock, a member of the leadership team at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties, to become a contestant and perform "The Hustle."

Palisades Real Estate Pros Walk and Run To Help Hearts With Hope and L.A. Food Bank

PACIFIC PALISADES – Five community-minded real estate professionals were among the 1,200 individuals who ran through local streets on Thanksgiving Day to raise funds and awareness to assist people who might not be able to do so themselves.

The participants from the Pacific Palisades office of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties showed their gratitude and support by taking part in the third annual Banc of California Pacific Palisades Turkey Trot, a 5K/10K charity event. Proceeds from the race benefit the Hearts With Hope Foundation and the Los Angeles Food Bank.

"With more than 1,200 runners and walkers, the event was a huge community success," said John Closson, Branch Manager and Regional Vice President of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties.

"Proceeds generated will go a long way toward helping in the mission of Hearts with Hope, which instructs medical personnel in the treatment and care of children with congenital heart diseases, as well as providing financial, educational, and emotional support to their families; and the Food Bank, which mobilizes resources to fight hunger in our community and provides food to 320,500 people every month."

The favorite charity of Susan Stearns, a sales associate in the Calabasas office of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties, is $10,000 stronger thanks to a grant she has earned on its behalf.

Stearns' volunteer efforts with New Horizons, a nonprofit dedicated to working with adults who have intellectual disabilities, were recognized Sept. 30 by the judges of REALTOR® Magazine’s 2015 Good Neighbor Awards. They named her one of five winners of the $10,000 grants from a field of national competitors.

Stearns has helped raise more than $2.5 million for New Horizons during her 30 years of volunteering, which include serving as board chair and fundraising chair. 

The award from the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) honors REALTORS® who:

  • Volunteer in their communities
  • Improve the quality of life for their neighbors
  • Go above and beyond in their commitment to making their neighborhoods better places to live

"The Agent Edge" Shares Secrets from Top-Producing Agents

Learning from the real estate industry’s top-producing agents just got easier with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties’ new podcast, "The Agent Edge."

“Our podcasts are all about revealing what separates a top producer from the rest. In each episode, one of our agents discusses their career in real estate, how they became successful, and gives insight into how other agents can build their own business. This can range from marketing strategy to simply finding which niche they work in best. It’s an entertaining hour filled with actionable tips agents can implement immediately to help boost sales and grow their client base," said host Sam Guillen, Corporate Director of Training. 

“In your car, at the gym, in your home or office, now you can listen to professionally produced real estate podcasts at your convenience.”

The inaugural episode, which launched on Oct. 20, features an interview with San Diego power agent Gregg Neuman of Neuman & Neuman. A licensed agent since 1981, Neuman discusses his formula for making it to the top and what it takes to become a leading agent.

A bonus segment includes an interview with Brianne Noonan, Neuman’s director of marketing, who explains how their team has become one of the top real estate groups in Southern California.

“At the end of each interview, we ask a series of rapid-fire questions, such as, ‘If there’s one single thing you had the ability to change, like a piece of legislation that would forever affect our industry, what would that be?’” Guillen said. “The answers are very enlightening.”

Rancho Bernardo Brokerage Celebrates Two Milestone Anniversaries

RANCHO BERNARDO – Two familiar faces with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties celebrated anniversaries in September – and not just with their office, but with the real estate industry as well.

Manager Kevin Williamson marked his first year with the office and 14th year in the profession, while Administrative Assistant Joan Ellam observed her 31st year in the same office

"People may be surprised to know that I have stayed 'on the corner' for 31 years and have worked for a series of real estate companies before Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties took over. When they ask why, I respond that I waited for Kevin, as he is a reward for the whole office!" Ellam said.

That kind of praise is common for Williamson, who relocated with his family to Rancho Bernardo from Riverside, his hometown, after managing a large real estate office in Rancho Cucamonga for three years, where he was manager and a top-producing agent.

"Company training and support are essential in this business and make all the difference in an agent's success," said Katie Holmes, a REALTOR®-Sales Associate in the Rancho Bernardo office. "I'm very fortunate to be part of a local branch with a manager like Kevin Williamson, who offers training and coaching that have helped propel my business to the next level."

Ellam, a mother of five and grandmother of six, was introduced to the office in 1983, when she moved from New Jersey to California and bought her first home. During the process, she saw an ad for an open position, applied, and has been in the Rancho Bernardo office since 1984. After her husband passed away in 1986, she said she appreciated what her career brought into her life even more. Not only did a steady paycheck help provide for her family, but the support and encouragement she received from co-workers also made coming to work a welcome task.

"I have seen many changes over the years, but I've stayed with the company because I know a good thing when I see it," she said. "Each department within the company continues to exceed above excellence. We are so blessed to have our corporate office with wonderful people so close by in Carmel Valley."

Two companies whose names are synonymous with luxury lifestyles – Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties and Roche Bobois – have formed an alliance designed to bring a new element of sophistication to the home buying and selling process. Clients will now have the opportunity to experience Roche Bobois' premium-quality furniture firsthand at the brokerage's La Jolla office at 1299 Prospect St. The concept is "Shop for a home and browse showroom pieces to get design ideas at the same time."

"Roche Bobois graciously integrated their showroom-designed pieces into our lobby for our clients to not only enjoy, but to also introduce them to the extraordinary, artistic furniture and interior accessories Roche Bobois is known for all over the world," said Nicki Marcellino, Regional Vice President and La Jolla office manager for Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties.

The alliance was formally announced Sept. 24 during a special meeting of the brokerage's Networking and Advisory Group, held at the La Jolla showroom of Roche Bobois at 7611 Girard Ave.

The Networking and Advisory Group, which provides insight and intelligence to management on how to best market sellers' properties, is comprised of top-producing agents from the company's premier luxury offices and is headed by seven directors, Jeannie Gleeson, Lisa Stennes, Todd Bloom, Gwyn Carter-Rice, Jan Clements, Suzanne Kropf, and Sue Carr. Also in attendance were select agents from the brokerage's premier San Diego locations, who were able to see firsthand the collection of premium-quality furniture and gain key insights on new marketing techniques.

Agents Clear the Coast at State’s Largest Volunteer Event

Southern California beaches, bays, and lagoons sparkled brighter than usual Sept. 19 thanks to hundreds of agents, managers, their families and friends of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties. All pitched in to make a difference on Coastal Cleanup Day, California's single-largest volunteer event.

Eager volunteers representing the company’s San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara county offices combed the sands and streets for three hours, hauling off hundreds of pounds of debris. Each wore a custom-designed T-shirt emblazoned with “Giving back to the community” in white letters on a solid background of Cabernet, the brand’s distinctive color.

“We formed a wall of volunteers from the street to the ocean in Huntington Beach,” said Mary Jespersen, Irvine office administrator. “It was like a sea of Cabernet marching across the sand. It really brought everyone together.”

“Our team loved it at the Santa Monica Pier,” said Karima Hawa, Beverly Hills office administrator. “They thought it was a great event, and can’t wait to do it again next year. We received a lot of thanks from people on the pier. Some even stopped their daily routines to help us out for a while.”

In San Diego, volunteers scoured the streets and alleys of Mission Beach, earning praise from local residents. In Ventura, they cleaned Seaward Beach at the end of Seaward Avenue.

“Coastal Cleanup Day is just one more example of how our people really care about the communities they serve,” said David M. Real Estate Veteran Kevin Williamson is New Manager At Rancho Bernardo Office of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties

Kevin Williamson, a 13-year real estate professional, has joined Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties as manager of the 52-agent Rancho Bernardo office. He has relocated with his family to Rancho Bernardo from Riverside, his hometown, after managing a large real estate office in Rancho Cucamonga the past three years. He previously was manager and a top-producing agent at another large real estate firm in Riverside County.

“Kevin has a deep understanding of the real estate market, especially the new technologies that help agents grow their business,” said David M. Cabot, President and CEO of San Diego-based Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties. “He is known for creating a culture of ethical, professional licensed agents in his offices, and we are extremely pleased that he has decided to join us.”

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties Real Estate Professionals Will Honor, Support Military Heroes in Transition with ‘Day at the Races’ at Del Mar Fairgrounds

The San Diego chapter of The Charitable Foundation of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties will present a “Day at the Races” at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Nov. 20, including food, drinks and a silent auction to support injured and disabled servicemen and servicewomen who seek temporary lodging.

San Diego-based Freedom Station helps military personnel begin the transition from defenders of freedom to productive members of America’s civilian workforce. Agents from all San Diego offices are invited to the benefit, which begins at 12:30 p.m., with first post at noon. Fairground gates open at 11 a.m.

Children’s Bureau to Receive Christmas Gifts, Donations From The Charitable Foundation’s Ladies Night Out Fundraiser

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO -- To help make the holidays brighter for needy families throughout the region, the Orange County chapter of The Charitable Foundation of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties will hold a benefit on their behalf Nov. 13.

The chapter’s Ladies Night Out, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Marbella Country Club in San Juan Capistrano, will bring together agents, staff and clients for an evening of fun, food, drinks, and music to raise money for Orange County charities.

A portion of the evening's donations will benefit the Children’s Bureau of Orange County. Toys for children from birth to 16 years will be collected for a “Toy Shop’" drive, where gifts will be distributed to needy families and parents can “shop” to find toys for their children to receive on Christmas morning.
